VCSEL and PIN Technology

High-performance optical components built for mission-critical applications

At Inneos, we design and manufacture vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) and PIN photodetectors that are optimized for performance, reliability, and integration into demanding environments — from aerospace and defense systems to advanced medical and industrial platforms.

Our component technologies form the foundation of our optical subsystems, but they’re also available as discrete components for teams that need to build their own custom optical links.

What is a VCSEL?

A VCSEL (Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser) is a type of semiconductor laser that emits light vertically from the surface of the chip — unlike edge-emitting lasers, which emit light from the side. VCSELs are compact, power-efficient, and ideal for short-reach, high-speed optical communication, low-power sensors, and very small optical modules.

These lasers convert electrical signals into optical signals, enabling fast, efficient communication over fiber — especially in systems where bandwidth, size, and EMI immunity matter.

Inneos manufactures a variety of VCSELs:

  • Wavelength options: devices from 795nm to 1000nm
  • High reliability over wide temperature ranges (e.g. -40°C to +125°C)
  • Multimode and single-mode components
  • Optimized designs for high-power single-aperture and low-threshold, low-power operation

What is a PIN Photodetector?

A PIN photodetector (or photodiode) is a semiconductor device that converts light back into an electrical signal. The “PIN” structure (P-type, Intrinsic, N-type) offers high-speed response and low capacitance — critical for high-bandwidth optical links.

In combination with a TIA (transimpedance amplifier), the photodetector forms the receive side of an optical link. Inneos InGaAs PINs are designed for integration into optical engines and photonics modules where the operating wavelength is in the 850nm to 1000nm.

Why Inneos Components?

Inneos isn’t just a component supplier — we’re a vertically integrated optical company with deep experience in engineering, simulation, and manufacturing. Our components are designed not just for lab use, but for real-world deployment in systems where failure is not an option.

We build VCSELs and photodetectors that are:

  • Rugged: Qualified to military and aerospace standards
  • Reliable: Built for long lifetime in thermally demanding environments
  • Compatible: Designed to integrate with a wide range of optical interfaces
  • U.S.-made: Designed and manufactured in our Nevada facility
